Background

Trends in the economy, especially in tourism, indicate that Canadian tourism and export markets are interested in food products that are unique, presenting a cultural experience to be savoured.  Aboriginals can capitalize on this craze though our cuisine, foods and beverages.  However, in order to do so, we must know what the Aboriginal suppliers are producing now, how to contact them, and what support services are needed to help them produce and export their products.

The federal government is helping to identify and connect them by producing a National Aboriginal Exporters directory that lists the Aboriginal food and beverages suppliers, hosting forums, and developing and executing strategies that facilitates product and market development.  The guiding strategy to Aboriginal Export and Trade is the Aboriginal International Business Development Strategy (AIBD) that is a partnership of several federal government departments, one of which is Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada that is leads the foods and beverages initiatives.

For a few years, the AIBD partners have produced the Aboriginal Export and Trade Directory.  The section that lists the Aboriginal food and beverages suppliers hasn’t been updated in a while.  Agri-Food wants to have the supplier list and information verified, more suppliers added.  Further, they’d like to promote the programs and services available to Aboriginal companies seeking to enter, maintain or expand their export markets, and as well, to identify the needs of these suppliers to further develop and execute activities that increase Aboriginal food and beverages exports.  One such activity could be the creation of an association for these companies.

Agri-Food is initiating a project to fulfill these needs.  The purposes of this project are threefold:

1)  update the Aboriginal food and beverages companies profiles in the Aboriginal Export Directory;

2)  promote the programs and services available to Aboriginal export companies; and

3) assess the needs of these Aboriginal companies  including determining the interest level to establish a National Aboriginal Food and Beverages Associations.
