BC First Nations Community Economic
Development Forum

“Restoring a Working Culture”

January 17 & 18, 2007

The forum will open with B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell (confirmed) and INAC Minister Jim Prentice (invited), along with host representatives of the First Nations Leadership Council (members) and the Regional Program Management Advisory Council (RPMAC - committee members) for INAC/BC  Economic Development.

This forum is by invitation only to B.C. First Nation leadership which is 198 Bands and roughly 30 Tribal Councils; estimated attendance is 400+ of B.C. First Nations’ most influential people.  The program is designed to encourage B.C.’s First Nation leaders to recognize community economic development as a priority and one that generates revenue and wealth, as well as provides meaningful long-term employment.  It also focuses on leadership capacity development for community economic development and includes discussions on the role of First Nation's leadership in community economic development, economic governance issues and structures as well as serving as a showcase for sharing best practices in community economic development and enterprise.

Goals of the Forum

  • Raise the awareness to and understanding of every Chief and Council of the impact and benefits of economic development

  • Increase the number of First Nations focusing on economic development – making wealth generation a priority versus spending resources

  • Inspire First Nations Chief and Council to promote economic development as a priority – across B.C. and Canada

Please note, this event is by invitation only to BC First Nations leadership - Band Chief and Council, and Tribal Council Board of Governance - the program has been designed specifically for leadership to enable leadership to better support CED initiatives and staff, and to incorporate CED into community strategies.

****There will be regional sessions in 2007/8 designed for program managers and other staff to attend.

Invited travelers - are:

  • First Nation Bands – two (2) representatives who are either the Chief or a Councilor (Band leadership)
